BR#7: Do you live for the applause?

A week back I came across Lady Gaga’s latest song ‘Applause’.

After checking out the video, I was keen on knowing the lyrics of the song. On reading the lyrics, the theme of the song became clear to me. In the song Lady Gaga talks about the importance of energetic applause and appreciation in her life. As I understood, the song is about Lady Gaga’s need to be told vehemently that she is good, she makes sense and she is liked – a lot. To be more specific, she expresses in the song that ‘I live for the applause’.

The refrain in the song lyrics is:

I live for the applause, applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause
Live for the applause-plause
Live for the way that you cheer and scream for me
The applause, applause, applause

The lyrics made me ask myself: Do I live for the applause?

Let me also ask you: Do you live for the applause?

What if you & I got no one cheering for us enthusiastically? What if no one cheers us at all for what we do? Will we then stop doing whatever we are doing because nobody appreciates us? You & I – we are not as world famous as Lady Gaga. Let me stretch this a little and say that most of us are not even famous in our city’s neighbourhood, colony or street that we live in.

So, what do we do now? No applause, no appreciation, no recognition, no one clapping for us, cheering for us, screaming for us, nobody even offering us two kind words – ‘well done’.

But we go on doing what we do daily for a living, don’t we? Of course, there are some among us, who prefer to do something daily as it feels meaningful. And this is exactly what all the successful and famous people over the ages have done. Applause or no applause, they carried on with their self-propelled acts filled with inner conviction, till one day they found their admirers and fans.

Lady Gaga sings for a living. To her, singing and performing is meaningful. But remember, like many successful people she too struggled a lot in the beginning. Forget any applause or appreciation, she was laughed at and bitterly criticized for how she expressed herself. But again, like all successful people, she was made of sterner stuff. She had a strong mind. She just kept doing what her inner drive made her do. Soon enough, people started responding to it, even began appreciating her talent. And then, as the saying goes, the world was her oyster.

So, what am I saying here? Well, Lady Gaga doesn’t actually live for the applause. I think you too would have figured out by now, that she actually lives to express herself as honestly as she possibly can. She started alone single-mindedly and today she has her ‘monsters’ (her nickname for her fans) who cheer and scream for her.

I may be going gaga about Lady Gaga, but I can assure you I am not her ‘monster’. I am just another guy trying to define ‘Her Gaganess’.
